Day 2: Hook of Holland to Hamburg

Sorry, folks, another not very exciting day of driving: just over 300 miles from the Ferry at Hook of Holland to Frommans Land Hotel just south of Hamburg!!!

Much vaunted German autobahns proved a major disappointment with two 30 minutes+ delays for road works and such. Not a lot of point having no speed limit if you are spending most of your time dogging along at 25 mph!!! I had only managed about 4 hours sleep on the ferry, so what ought to have been a five hour drive that became eight hours was not the most joyful experience. Whinge, whinge, whinge….. Still wall to wall sunshine all day, gotta count my blessings!

Talking of blessings, I’ve now had two running repairs to take care of on the Cat. Stopped for fuel on the autobahn today and happened to bump into two bikers i had met on the Ferry. One of them spotted what looked like a Philips head screw in the front offside tyre…. I decided to leave well alone given the tyre was not losing pressure, and took it slowly over the remaining miles to Hamburg.

Found a clean and business like garage about two miles from the hotel and in about ten minutes they kindly swapped the wheel for my spare – that would probably have taken me about three hours!

The lads then set about fixing the tyre they had removed, only to find it was the smallest Philips head screw ever and the tyre had suffered no damage at all!!! That’s a five pence piece in the pic, so you can get some idea of the scale….

Cost me 29 Euro for the wheel change but happy to pay rather than worry about the tyre exploding on me when hammering down the autobahn tomorrow, on my way to the Ferry to Stavanger….

Yesterdy, somehow the offside headlamp came loose and started flapping around like a demented noddy dog… I managed to find a real tip of a garage in Harwich with a couple of super sized and heavily tattooed geezers about to knock off at 5:50. Initial response was to growl at me, but the combination of the Caterham and my oily charm won them over: they fixed the headlamp in about five minutes and didn’t want to charge me!!! I gave them a tenner to buy themselve a beer each and we parted the best of mates….

On to to Denmark tomorrow, my third country so far and looking forward to the ferry ride to Stavanger. Hopefully, some much more worthwhile pics and experiences to share with you…..

  1. Blimey, couple of eventful days already! Hopefully that is the last time you will need to seek out help from anyone with problems with the car. Good that neither issue was too difficult to sort, roll on tomorrow! Shame about the Autobahns, maybe you’ll cruise through tomorrow.
