Day 5.1: The Flam Railway

You all get a bonus post today: one for the Flam Railway and a second for the journey from Flam to Geiranger: as you will see both are very dramatic!!!

This is the engine that drags the Flam Railway train up a largely 5.5% track from Flam at sea level up to Myrdal at 2,844 feet, a journey of 12 1/2 miles which takes almost exactly one hour.

The route has 20 tunnels – one of which takes a 180 degree turn inside the mountain – and took 20 years to build, the 1420 yard tunnel between Kårdal and Pinnalia on its own took 11 years to build!

The journey was an hour each way, and as you can imagine i have dozens and dozens of pics, so i have tried to constrain myself to a selection that will give you a flavour of the whole experience. It is certainly the most impressive train journey i’ve enjoyed even allowing for Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch in the Alps!!!

The funny looking triangular brown stuff is a local speciality goat’s cheese which is made in the farm way up in the valley and shown in the preceding pic in the gallery!

The final pic is the Flam Church, built in 1670, originally dedicated to the Catholic faith, but latterly Evangelical Lutheran: still in use and seats 160 worshippers….

I don’t usually post videos because they soak up so much memory but i am very fond of these two and hopefully they will not slow down your system too much!!! Feedback on that would be very helpful, please……
