Day 7: Geiranger to Molde

Well, that was fun!!!

Difficult to imagine a more challenging and enjoyable drive: mostly done in the dry or at worst a gentle drizzle in mild temperatures.

It only really started to rain when i was 20 miles from Molde and as i sit here in the hotel it has brighted up considerably…..

The two stretches of road could not have been more different: the Eagle Road coming up from the fjord at Geiranger was steep, quiet, with 11 pretty challenging hairpin bends to navigate. Not a lot of opportunity to take in the view! Then it settles down into relatively straightforward drive to the ferry at Eidsal across to Ligne: from there it’s a few miles up to the much more dramatic Trollstigen Mountain Route: most of the pics are from the Trollstigen [which you will have figured out translates as ‘The Trolls Road!]

So, if you would like to see more of the Eagle Road, i have cheated and given you a link to a YouTube video probably made by somebody who had a passenger to take it for them!!! Eagle Road

Here are some pics of the ferry crossing from Eidsal to Ligne:

Somehow i managed to make a wrong turn not long after getting off the ferry, but found myself in a valley with a fjord and village probably rarely seen by tourists!!! This is what i saw…

The Trollstigen really was in a class of its own in terms of both driving and scenery. Lots of snow alongside the road, not as deep as on Sunday but a great deal more extensive. The peaks of the mountains reminded me very much of the Dolomites: very jagged and rugged: not easy to get pics for you, tho’ because of the cloud and mist that had come down. Many truly remarkable waterfalls which probably was the cause of the only downside: the road was very crowded!!! Lots of tourist buses – stopping wherever they felt like it so their customers could get their pics – plus dozens and dozens of motorhomes.

It the final pic you can see the road winding its way down past the foot of the cascade!!!

Lastly, here is a short video to give you an idea of the weather conditions and a look at one more the more dramatic waterfalls…..

All the traffic meant i seem not to have taken as many pics as i would have liked but i hope these are sufficient to give you an idea of why the Trollstegin Mountain route attracts so many visitors.

One final thought about all the hairpins: much more of this and i shall be getting home with forearms like Popeye!!!

A different type of dramatic day tomorrow – we are off to Trondheim but going the pretty way via the Atlantic Road: lots of bridges joining up islands and peninsulars, but so far as i can see, no ferries!!!
