Day 11: Mo i Rana to Bodo and Ferry to Reine

Today was mainly about crossing into the Arctic Circle – i’ve never been that far north before and as you will see from the pics our Norwegian friends make a pretty big deal of the event!

After we left Mo i Rana the road climbed steadily and we could see the snow line and the tree line both moving lower as we headed further north.

And so into the Artic Circle…..

I still haven’t actually seen a live reindeer, although i have eaten some. Inside the tourist trap was a rather magnificent stuffed example….. And of course i had to buy a woolly had showing that i had crossed into the Arctic Circle!!!

Here’s a vid of the area around the Arctic Circle Centre……

We see masses of Teslas and other electric motors in Norway and i was interested to see when i made one of my innumerable stops for fuel that there were more electric charging points at this gas station in the Arctic Circle than there were petrol pumps!!!

Norwegians also very big on public transport and even this far north there are regular train services.

Next stop was Bodo where we boarded the ferry for the four hour crossing to the Lofoten Islands and the village of Reine. Lots of motor cycles waiting to board, we see many solo riders and great numbers of motor cycle groups heading north like us. The weirdly warm weather making that much more pleasant than they might have expected, i guess. It was so hot i had to dispensed with my leather flight jacket and drove in shirtsleeves….. Talking mid 20s C!!! Arctic Circle, what????

Amazing views from the ferry as you can see….

Here’s a pic of my wee red hus! Very cozy and well equipped former fisherman’s cottage…..

We have two nights at Reine, so chores day tomorrow, sorting out clothes and getting straight. Also have an ambition to climb the local peak: Reinebryggen – 1,500 feet or so!!!

Off to dinner now……
