Day 14: Narvik to Alta

Another day of wall to wall sunshine and tropical temperatures up here in the Arctic Circle: as i sit here now in my hotel room in Alta i am being told it is 26c outside… I even managed to sunburn my right arm driving the 300 miles without the roof on the Cat!!!

Somebody up there loves me…..

I have been desperately seeking pics of Reindeer ever since i got here, mainly for the benefit of grandchildren Martha, Max and Edie, but have still not even seen any [although i have eaten a little….] My friends John and Alison did manage to see and photograph a couple today, so there they are!!!

I will try harder tomorrow……

Quite a long but overall relaxing day of driving today. Only one hairpin but innumerable tunnels! No ferries!! I have completely run out of superlatives to describe the scenery here in North Norway so i will chicken out and let the pics do the talking…..

It really does feel like each time you turn a bend, yet another magical vista appears….

No day would be complete without a spectacular bridge and a pretty Norwegian church, so here they are…..

One thing i have not mentioned as a source of great delight are all the wild flowers up here, vast meadows of them in some places. I guess that the further north we go, the later it is that the Norwegians harvest the hay, so the wild flowers are much more noticeable…. here are some examples, even though they don’t begin to do justice to the panoply of yellow, mauve, blue and white we see, most particularly along the roadsides, not just in the meadows…..

Also managed to cross the snow line again, albeit briefly, but this time at about 1,500 feet….

Here are a couple of vids which perhaps give you a better idea of the scale and grandeur of the place than a static image…..

Sorry about the REM at the end of the third one, but a Norwegian hornet of some sort was trying to have its lunch on me……

So, the final leg tomorrow: we drive 130 or so miles to stay in Honningsvag the nearest town to Nordkapp, which is about 20 miles away… there is some ambiguity with our entrance ticket to the Nordkapp Centre, so we are planning to drive on to Nordkapp from the hotel tomorrow afternoon to get our date stamped and then go back on Thursday for a longer visit.

Exciting or what???

  1. It all does look magnificent T and I cannot believe your weather. I would imagine it would look more brooding and dramatic with cloud and rain but would me more difficult for the driving. Is this the part of the drive with all the bridges and Islands, little like the Florida Keys? Hope you enjoy your day at the Nordkapp centre xx
