Day 19: Rovaniemi to Kokkola

Not a lot to share with you today, folks! The drive was almost completely without stress – apart from, for the first time, almost running out of fuel….. Today the roads were mostly of a good standard and the Reindeer behaved themselves. I guess as we get further south there are fewer of the beasts, the roads become busier and the authorities put up more fences to keep Reindeer off the highways because the consequences of a crash are much greater.

I was hoping that the drive along the coast beside the Gulf of Bothnia might generate some worthwhile pics for you, but the Finns plant tall trees next to the roads to help keep them open in the heavy snow and to deter jay-walking Reindeer, so i didn’t catch a glimpse of the water even once!!!

And being fully focused now on getting home safely, i chose not to make detours try to find photo opportunities…. we’ll see how we get on tomorrow!

Another long drive tomorrow – almost 300 miles from Kokkola to Helsinki to catch the ferry to Travemunde in Northern Germany. It’s a 30 hour crossing of just under 600 miles and saves us well over a thousand miles of driving through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. We also get to sail past the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, so another childish opportunity to give Vladimir the finger…….
